Learning to hear and listen with a cochlear implant can be an exciting journey. It can also be fraught with frustration for many. CHHA-Sudbury Branch provides resources and peer mentoring for recipients of a cochlear implant and those considering a cochlear implant.
A cochlear implant is a medical device that bypasses the damaged part of the ear and sends electrical signals to the auditory nerve in the inner ear. It is not a hearing aid.
A hearing aid provides amplification of sounds and relies on the remaining functioning nerve hair cells in the inner ear. A cochlear implant bypasses the damaged nerve hair cells and stimulates the auditory nerve directly.
People with a severe to profound hearing loss in both ears and receive little or no benefit from hearing aids may benefit from an implant.
The objectives of ‘Learning to Hear’ are:
- Provide support and mentoring to those with a Cochlear Implant.
- Assist people in making informed choices regarding implant surgery.
- Provide tools and resources to assist people in their journey of learning to hear with the device.
